It took 14 years to build the Sydney Opera House, starting in 1959 and finally finishing in 1973.
There was a competition to decide how to design the Opera House. There were 233 entries!
Jørn Utzon, an architect from Denmark won the competition in January 1957 and got £5,000 for his design.
The Sydney Opera House was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th October 1973.
The Opera House is 185 metres tall and about 120 metres wide at its widest point. It is supported on 588 concrete piers sunk as much as 25 metres below sea level.
There are five theatres and the largest is the Concert Hall which has 2,679 seats.
The building is big enough that 8 Boeing 747 aeroplanes could sit side to side on the site.
