Rainforest facts

Jungles are amazing environments for animal and plants to grow but what is a rainforest?

Rainforests are found in Africa, Asia, Australia, and Central and South America. The largest rainforest in the world is the Amazon rainforest in South America.

The rainforest can receive 450cm of rain a year; it can take ten minutes for a falling raindrop to drop to the ground from the top of the trees.

There aBlack-howler monkey, Alouatta carayare hundreds of species of animals that live in the rainforest. The black howler monkey that lives in the Latin American rainforests, when they call to each other can be heard from 5km away! The animals and plants work together in the rainforest to help maintain their habitat and to keep them safe. For example plants will provide a home and sugar for the ants and in return the ants will protect the plant from other insects that want to eat the plant’s leaves.

Every year they find new species of animals and insects as there are just so many that live in the rainforest!

The rainforest plants provide us with a quarter of the ingredients that we need in modern medicines.

Rainforests are built up of different layers which you can see below:

Emergent Layer

These giant trees grow higher than the canopy layer and have huge mushroom-shaped crowns. They enjoy the high temperatures and strong winds.

Canopy Layer

These trees grow up to 30 metres from the ground, the trees are very thick and full of life as they are home to 90% of the animals and insects in the rainforest.

The understory is quite a dark and wet place as it is covered by the canopy and emergent layer. There are many leafy plants and young trees on this layer.

Forest Floor

Little grows here except plants that grow without much sunlight. On the floor is a thin layer of fallen leaves, seeds, fruits, and branches that very quickly decomposes and goes back in to the soil to serve as food for the trees to grow.
