Queen Victoria Facts

Alexandrina Victoria was born in 1819 and died in 1901.

Victoria was the longest ever reigning monarch in Britain. She was queen for 63 years!

We describe things as ‘Victorian’ nowadays because so much happened while Queen Victoria was in charge.

Victoria’s father and grandfather both died when she was a baby meaning that she was next in line for the throne after her uncle, King George IV.

German was Victoria’s first language! She spoke English and French as well.

She came from a German family that we call the Hanoverians (they came from Hanover in Germany).

On her 17th birthday Victoria met her first cousin, Albert. She really liked Albert and asked him to marry her in 1839, after she became Queen.

Queen Victoria had 9 children! Most of them married into other royal families which meant Victoria was related to lots of important families.

Her big family meant she was sometimes called the ‘Grandmother of Europe’.

Victoria’s husband Albert died in 1861. Victoria was very sad about his death and wore black for the rest of her life.

Our Queen now (Elizabeth II) and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh are BOTH great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria.

Britain became very powerful while Victoria was in charge. She was Queen to the biggest empire in history, (she was in charge of a lot of countries).

‘We are not amused’ is a saying many people think Victoria said all the time. A lot of people think this was because she didn’t smile very much in pictures.

Queen Victoria was the first monarch to live at Buckingham Palace!
