Seahorse Facts

The seahorse is a very cool type of fish. How much do you know about this special sea creature?

Seahorses cannot curl their tales backwards!

Seahorses are very unique because they are the only species on earth in which the male has the babies. Male seahorses have a special pouch on their tummy where they store eggs until they hatch.

Once a girl seahorse and a male seahorse meet, they usually stay together for life.

Seahorses don’t have stomachs! This means that they have to eat all the time to stop them from getting hungry. Mostly they eat plankton and small crustaceans by sucking them up with their long snouts.

Seahorses are actually very bad swimmers! Luckily they have prehensile tails, which means they can easily use them to hang onto weeds and corals to stop themselves from getting too tired.

Sometimes Seahorses like to swim in pairs, they link themselves together using their tails.

When Seahorses swim, they do so by using a little fin which sits on their back. This flutters up to 35 times per second. They also have lots of very tiny fins on the back of their head which are used for steering.

Extension is a very big threat to Seahorses. This is because of pollution and people over using them in aquariums.

The Thorny Seahorse is just like a chameleon because it can change its colour to suit its surroundings. Most species of Seahorse are great at camouflage; the Common Pygmy Seahorse uses its colour and size to blend into the corals.

You can find Seahorses in mild and tropical waters around the world.
